  • Health problems in Finland

Insomnia is a big public health issue in Finland and is twice as common there as in other countries. Depression is one factor and substance abuse is another. Sleeping medication is more widespread in Finland than in other European countries.

The schizophrenia gene is found in northern Finland and the risk of developing the illness there is three times higher, compared to 1% elsewhere. That region was founded by about 40 families and the communities have a very specific genetic background. For that reason, researchers found it easier to study the illness there. They found a gene thought to be responsible for the faulty development of the brain and are working with biochemists in Germany to compare data.
