  • Family names and marriages

Norden newspaper reports that in nearly 18% of all marriages in Finland last year, both partners chose to keep their family names. This has been the trend since the law was amended in 1986. Ten years ago 12% of both partners chose to keep their family names. In recent years the wife usually takes her husband's surname or she uses a double surname. In only 1% of marriages did the man choose to take his wife's family name and there are no records of a man taking a double surname. There were 30,000 marriages last year and nearly half of the couples married during the summer months.
