SFHS Members write for highly regarded parish Journal: The Oravais Yearbook [title]
Orvas 2006 Annual (80 pages) has just been released. It contains 28 articles about Oravais parish, the both
Old and New Oravais. Two of the authors are Kelly Keegan and Marita Agnew, SFHS members.
“Orvasbor” (Oravais residents), people living outside the parish and even in Sweden are also among
the authors. “The common element is that the articles have a connection to Oravais”, says
Ann-Mari Löfdahl who edited the work with Gun-Britt Bergman and Leif Öling.
Märtha Vesterback’s has written about the pottery making in Keskis. Håkan Eklund’s article describes
his meetings with the farmers Alfred Simons (Ånäs) och Karl Kullman (Kimo), both ornithologists. Leif
Öling describes the painter Gustaf Lindbäck, Erik Blomqvist on Vinlax chicken farming, Inga Vienonen
on the summer paradise Öjskatan, Sven Backlund on the houses i Solbo (Oravais’ factory town at the
turn of the 19th century, now a museum), and Bengt Wiklund writes about the manor called Storskyttens which
was moved from Kantlax in Munsala to Kimo in Oravais. Some write in a humorous style. Kurt Vienonen’s
story would be included in that genre, about how it happened that he became a fiddler. In last years’s issue
Bertil Holmlund wrote about Dunkarin, the vacuum generator which was located in Kimo. Now he follows up
with games and such around Dunkarin where there occasionally were tar pits treacherously concealed by the
sawdust being blown around. Olof Åström och Erik Sepänaho, who grew up around saws, mills, and river channels
in Ånäs have focused on the pranks of boyhood.
