I'm helping a man in Australia whose great grandfather was born in Finland in the 1850s with the name Matt/Mathias. He said his parents were Jake or John and Mary Wilson (Olson?). Matt was a sailor and took the name Matt Mattson. His ship sank near New Zealand in 1882; Matt stayed there and married. He said that he was born near Gamlakarleby. That's about all we know. Nothing in Karleby records seems to match. Does anyone know of a family with a sailor son who went to sea and never returned?
