    "...Edvin Hjelt was born April 1 1856 in Helsingfors to Minister Nils Ludvig Emil and Johanna Hjelt. It would appear he was not very successful in school and when Edvin was 15 his parents decided that he should go to sea. Edvin made his first voyage over the North Sea in 1871 as ordinary seaman on the Brig Axel Mauritz.
