"Nobody is so poor that he cannot help others -
and nobody so rich that he never won't need help".

This Finnish proverb says something that is really true when you are looking for your roots. We all need help at some point since everybody will hit a brick wall at some point. Of course this can be done through the local genealogy groups and associations but there are other ways. There are many groups on the internet who have joined forces and meet on so called discussion forums

  • Research in Finland

    By June Pelo

The most important sources for genealogy in Finland are the church records. The best way to research those records is to contact a parish register office and ask for information, or to read church records on microfilm in archives or libraries. Some church records are on microfiche from the period 1850-60 to 1900. If there is no microfiche for this time period locally, one must contact the parish register office. Information in church...

  • Researching the Migration

During the past 100 – 150 years close to 1,4 million people have emigrated from the current area of Finland. Several different countries have been receiving them as immigrants - on all the inhabited continents. In the 1500-1600's people from Finland emigrated to what later would be called "Finnwoods" in Sweden and Norway. When Finland was part of Russia people migrated within the Russian Empire. When the Californian Gold Rush started Finns were also on the move. Between 1850 and 1920 some 400.00...

  • Interviewing Living Relatives

Before starting to dig in all the interesting resources on the Internet you should consider getting as much as possible documented of the information you can gather from your living relatives. The databases and archives probably will be there for you also later on, but the family stories your relative or family friend has and remembers can be gone tomorrow. Of course it is not that easy to get people to share their stories. It is as difficult to give advice how to best succeed in this ve...

  • The History Books – and HisKi

    History Books

The so called "History Books" are books kept in the parishes: births, marriages, deaths/burials, moves and banns. The three first were transcribed into what was called the "Black Books" back in the 1900's. At some point volunteers transcribed the three "Black Books" into a digital format – partly this process is still ongoing. Still this day excel documents are being delivered to the Genealogical Society of Finland [GSF] by volunteers, after which volunteers at the GSF ...

Many Northern Finns traveled West, and settled in Northern Norway. Norsk-Finns are sometimes referred to as Kvaen (Kvæn). In order to make life easier; when pressured by the government to become “Norwegianized”, they gave in. Many Finns, and Sami lost their original identities, and were from then on recorded as being ‘Norwegian’.
