  • National Archives Records Available Online!

SFHS member June Pelo advises that researchers and genealogists can now use the Internet to check more than 50 million historical records at the National Archives, from Civil War battles to family immigration files. For instance, someone researching a great-grandfather who immigrated to the US in the 19th century can choose the series of records listed under "Immigrants," enter the relative’s name, and learn on what ship he traveled, his occupation, the date he arrived in the US, and the country from which he left, among other details. There is also information related to military action, casualties, and POWs. The database draws from the records of twenty federal agencies, and there may be typographical errors or inaccurate dates. No corrections have been made as the records are in their original condition.
