  • J. L. Runeberg

On Februry 5th it will be 200 years since the birth of our national poet, Johan Ludvig Runeberg and he will be celebratred through out the country, but especially here in Borgå, where he lived most of his adult life and wrote most of his work.

A new web site has been opened: http://www.runeberg.net/ where you get lots of information about different aspects of J.L.R. and you can listen to a few poems being read by the actor Dan Henricsson from Borgå.

    Runeberg

    Thanks Sune,
Borgå is a lovely town! We took three other Swedish Finn descendents there about 6 years ago, and I think it was a favorite stop, after their grandparents' home parishes. The confirmation of a large class of youngsters was happening at the moment - impressive older stone church building. And walking through Runeberg's home, I had to remember Frederika, the wife, running up and downstairs from the basement kitchen to serve the many literati who visited the great man. I understand her reputation as a writer has undergone a small renaissence as well.
I believe there is a recent children's book about Runeberg's boyhood which is very well written.

      J. L. Runeberg 1804-2004

Today the Finnish Post released a block of four stamps commemorating Runeberg's 200th anniversary.
Since the site http://www.posti.fi/ is difficult to navigate even with knowledge of Finnish or Swedish (they are "revamping" the English pages), I attach the image of the block from their site below.
