Finnish economists predict a deep recession in Finland this year. According to forecasts the economy will decline by 5% this year; exports are predicted to decline nearly 20% from last year. The GDP might go down b 4.4% this year.

Finnish businessman Toivo Sukari plans to build a life-size copy of the Titanic in the village of Kiiminki in northern Finland. This repica will have a hotel and several restaurants. It will be 269 meters long and 28 meters wide. He plans to make it as close to the original as possible and it will be open in Nov. 2011. He already owns a furniture store chain and shopping center in the village. He said there are no tourist attractions in the Oulu region and hopes this will attract tourists.

The oldest Finn is Viljo Kekola, who celebrated his 108th birthday on April 8. In the 1920s-30s he worked in the gold mines in Canada, but returned to Finland where he worked in the woods as a lumberjack until he turned 100. (I have a cousin who will be 104 this year. Her father was Adolf Karlsson Keldo-Källström, whose siblings and their father were cantors in various churches in Finland in the 1800s.)

There are more people living in Finland who were born in 1948 than any other year.
