  • Finland maps

I appreciated printing some maps from the Pedesore website.

Does a similar website exist for the Munsala area showing detail
    of the area?

    Thanks

lots of local maps for Finland

I went into google and typed "map of munsala finland" and voila!

    http://www.multimap.com/index/FI1.htm

Better than the first url which I deleted hurridly. You area also able to find local maps of a lot of communities in Finland.

Edit2: http://www.multimap.com/ This shows that the org is in the UK .

    Edit3:
    http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.c...g.x=144&g.y=88
This shows that you can move around Finland so I think the first map list I put up here is an error. They are a new company so probably more an internal feature that I stumbled into.

      Maps of Fnland

      Many thanks, Chuck.

June has provided several complete and translated
Ahnentafels with names of localities which include family names
which helps bring the "distant past" right here on this screen.
I also recall logging onto actual highway scenes in Finland,
from mounted cameras along roadways, but I can't for the life
of me remember the website. I think it might have been
somewhere on "genealogia.fi" but I'm not positive.

Syrene, I cross that "bridge" several times a day and learn
      something new with every crossing.

          Webcams in Finlnad

          June,

Just to let you know that I may never turn on my television
again, what with all those Finnish webcams available.

Now help me get my mother to the United States PRIOR
to 1910 when she was a beautiful 18 year old. She and
Gustaf were married in N.J. in 1902 and I'll be darned if I can
get her "over here" before 1910.

By the way, was transportation in Finland in the 1800's a
matter of "Hitching old Dobbin" to the wagon, except for that
train that must have run from Munsala to Abo?.

I really mean it, thanks for all those webcam sites

            Bill's mother

            Bill,

Post some info. about your mother: name, dates, etc. and maybe someone on Finlander can find her arrival in the US. Ellis Island records began in 1892 - prior to that they landed at Castle Garden - if they were headed for NY. Did you find her listed in the Migration Institute?

As for transportation in the 1800s, from what I've read the people rode in a wagon if their family had a horse; otherwise they walked to the nearest railroad station. My father said he, his mother and sister each carried a small piece of baggage and walked from the farm to Gamlakarleby where they caught the train to Hangö in 1909.

              very old map

              http://www.histdoc.net/uscha/index.html

I posted this to links of interest, I think.

It's about 1898 or so and in the left column you will be able to find town names and all kinds of goodies. The maps will even show route stops for the diligence, some big farms, and so on.

A very nice place in my opinion.

Bill, I checked Migration Institute for your mother. There is no Ida Hofman, but there is a Johanna Hofman, no date of birth, from Korsnäs issued a passport 28.05.1902, destination Sweden. I found one Johanna Hoffman, 18, Finland, Wasa, arriving 13 May 1895 "Scythia" from Liverpool, but that would have her dob 1877. Destination, Lynnsville, MA. This was on Boston Passenger List.

Eagle camera at http://www.panoraama.com/live/maakotka/ has been popular - nothing there in winter, of course.

                      eagle nest

If you want to watch eagles nesting, the City of Cape Coral, Florida has an eaglecam:

                      http://69.34.225.3/

If you can't reach it there, try:
http://www.capecoral.net/eaglecam/ and then put demo as the user name and password.

Florida probably has the largest collection of bald eagle nests in the country. Last week someone in our town knocked down a tree containing an eagle's nest. When they are caught they'll face a heavy fine as it's a crime to knock down a tree containing an eagle's nest - and no one can build within 500 feet of the tree.
