Gift Shops

Hi Michael,

Thanks so much for sharing the links to the various gifts shops that carry Finn-related gifts. I like to share my heritage with friends and family, especially during the Christmas season, so I always buy Scandinavian.

In fact, for the past few years that I’ve served on a hospital board, I’ve shared the story of St. Lucia; given gifts of straw ornaments and juniper butter spreaders; and told of the beautiful hearts that seem to surface everywhere in Finland and Sweden at Christmas.

This year, I will be sharing a special gift with each board member: A Scandinavian Fortune Cookie – the ones that contain an Ole and Lena joke!

I thought it was apropos for a hospital setting. As someone once said, “Laughter is the best medicine!”

St. Lucia celebration

I'm attaching a picture taken in the Palm Furniture store in Ludington, MI in the 1940s. Anders Palm was my father's uncle and I can remember playing in their stores when I was a child. Mr. Palm and his family held annual St. Lucia Day festivities in their stores. Pictured are St. Lucia and her attendants and the woman pouring coffee at the right is my father's sister. Sorry, the article is so large I couldn't get all the print to appear.

One of the recipes in here are Skillingsbolle. When I was a little girl in Bergen we juse to getthem everey sunday. It still remember me of my childhood. You must try them. Edle

Ihave one here.
Skillingsboller.
75 gr. smør-Good butter
3 dl milk
3/4 dl sugar
25 gram yeast-
1 liter of flouver
1ts kardamom
melt butter, kanel .sugar.
Melt butter have in milk. let it be fingerwarm-37 gr. Take the yeast in it Take the flouver, kardamom and sugar . Put it together and let it be big. Double sice. Make an 20 cm rektangel . Put on melted butter , cinnamon and sugar in1-3 Rold it together and cut it 2cm. put on a plate Should be double. Have sugar on.and cinnamon Put it in the midle of the owen and fry them-
200 gr. in 10-12 minutes.
