  • December 6

December the 6th is Independence Day in Finland. Also the day of the President's Independence Day Reception. In the evening all Finland lights candles in the windows and watches their TV sets to see the BALL! The President of the Republic of Finland Tarja Halonen and Dr. Pentti Arajärvi will hold the traditional Independence Day reception at the Presidential Palace on 6 December 2006.

As in previous years, invitations have been sent to all members of the Government, Members of Parliament, the Finnish Members of the European Parliament, senior civil servants and members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Finland. Also among the guests will be Finns who have distinguished themselves in some way or another and persons whom the President and Dr. Arajärvi have met in the course of the past year. About
1,900 guests have been invited in all.

And in the US December 6 is the day the public can see on TV the rooms in the White House that are decorated for Christmas.

You can watch the ball directly via internet at YLE
The program starts at 18:50 Finnish time (11:50 am EST).
Windows Media Player is needed for video. The address above now has only some text in Finnish.
