  • Gold rush in Lappland

The Nov. 20 issue of Norden newspaper has an article about a new gold rush in Lappland, due to the high price for gold - now at $385 per ounce. Residents of Kittilä are protesting the use of cyanide by the Swedish mining company Riddarhyttans. Australian and South African companies are also opening mines in northern Finland. I have a small vial of gold dust given to me by a relative who panned for gold in Lappland a few years ago.

The same issue of the newspaper has a nice article about our Finlander member Lars Granholm and the International Marine Certification Institute in Brussels, one of the largest in its field in Europe, which he founded.
