  • Palokangas.. known as Palo in U.S.A.

Hi, I'm searching for ANY information on the following

Jaako [Jacob ?] Palokangas born July 27, 1840.. probably in Evijarvi..Died Sept. 9,, 1916 Finland. May have married Maria Nelimark.. Neljamark or Wertanen. Parents may have been Juha and Kaisa Jaakontr Nelimark. Maria is believed to have been bornnFeb. 25, 1846 in Evijarvi and died Oct. 23, 1911 in Finland, unknown where.

They had the following known children Alexander bornSept. 17, 1867 Kortesjarvi....came to U.S. 1890..Married about 1888 in Finland to Sanna Maria Jutilla who came to U.S. 1893 with son Nikolai born about 1890 in Finland.

Johanna born Nov. 12, 1873 in Finland...came to U.S. 1890s...married Isak Kanniainen [Kan] in Dec 1897 probably in Minnesota.

Emma born July 25, 1869 in Finland, Married Herman Wartanen who apparently took the name Palo. Were probably married in Finland before 1891.
    Came to U.S. WHEN ?

Would appreciate Any help on this family. Thank you, Karen

I'll start with Johanna. I found her in several census in Rice River Township, Aitkin, MN. I'll do her first to save someone else duplicating efforts.

1900 Census Aitkin, MN township 46
Kan, Isaac, 39, Dec 1860, married 2 yrs, Finland, US 1888, in US 11 yrs, farmer
    Johanna, 24, Dec 1875, 2 children, US 1895, in US 4 yrs.
children: Abram 12, Dec 1888, born Finland, must be Isaac's son
Helmi 1, Nov 1898, MN and Oscar, 2/12, MN
Mari Kan, 67, mother, Mar 1833, widow, married 30 yrs, 8 children, 6 living
Assumption, Isaac must have been a widower when he married Johanna.

1920 census, Rice River, Aitkin, MN

    Isaac is 59, farmer
Hanna (Johanna) 45, now has US 1892
    children:
    Oscar 19, farmer, home farm
    Hanna 18, servant, private family
    Hulda 17
    Sofia 12
    Annie 10
    Aino J 8
    Jacob 6
    Lily 1
Entry directly above has Hjalmar Johnson, farmer, wife Helmi, 21, MN, Elsie E 4
Wiljo 3 and Abraham Kan, 32, single, boarder, Finland, US 1894, laborer, logging. I assume Helmi is Helmi Kan. That makes 9 children for Johanna and Isaac Kan.

Do you know Emma Palokangas middle name? I found 2 Herman Palo in MN, neither married to an Emma. Found one in St Louis County and one in Aitkin County. I can't find her under Emma Wartanen either, in fact all spellings have Wirtanen, but no Emma or Herman.
There are many Palo in the MN Death Index. I'll try to match the names I found in the census. Same with the Kan names. But not til tomorrow, I'm tired. Karen

          Thank You

Thank you Karen for your help !! I do have some of the info you sent. Didn't have all the Palo census though. The Herman Palo in Aitkin county is the right one but Emma died and he had remarried by then . To a Hanna I think? Don't have all my info handy so I'm not sure of her name. Would be interested in the Herman you found in St. Louis County. Don't know if he might be Emma and Herman's son as they had a son Herman also. I think his name was actually Art but he went by Herman .

Yes, Isak Kan was married in Finland and Abram was his son from that marriage. There may also have been a daughter who died in Finland. I've been trying to find out something about his 1st wife but nothing so far !! Abram was born in Kerala, Oulu...Jan. 8, 1888. Do you have any idea where Kerala is or was ? Well, will go for now. Thank you again for your help. Have a good night.

          Karen

John J Palo born 8 Jan 1894, died 12 Dec 1972 Biwabik, St Louis, MN mmn Jyntila
Martha Palo 6 Jul 1895, died 17 Dec 1971 in Ely, St Louis, MN
Alexander Palo Jr 1 May 1895, died Jan 1972 in Anoka, MN
Walter Palo 28 Nov 1896, died 6 Apr 1979 in Virginia, St Louis, MN
Isaac Kan died 16 Feb 1939 in Aitkin, MN
Abraham Kan 23 Dec 1888, died 15 May 1971 in Aitkin, MN, birth agrees with 1900 census month.
Helmi Johnson 14 Nov 1898, died 27 Mar 1991, Carlton, MN mmn Palo
Oscar Kann died 25 Dec 1928 in Aitkin, MN
Helmi E Palo 1 Jun 1902, died 16 Jun 1997 in Sauk Rapids, Benton, MN mmn Kyrola. This is Alex Jr's wife.
Alexander Palo, no birth date, died 16 Feb 1943 in St Louis, MN. I think this is Alex Sr. ???
I'll look at the 2 Herman Palo's in the census for you. Karen

1910 Census for Rice River, Aitkin,MN
Palo Herman 40, married 2, US 1891, farmer
              Hanna V, 36, married 1,
              Lempi J 16, MN. Emma L 12, MN. Herman A 6, MN and Hulda J 3, MN.
I have to go back and recheck the info. I believe it says 1 yr. in present marriage, which would make children Emma's.

Yes, it says 1 years in present marriage. I still can't find the family in 1900. Emma should have been alive at least until 1907 if the children are all hers.

                  Karen,
It looks like Herman married for a third time. In 1920, I find him still in Rice River, Aitkin, MN, but now he's married to a Sofia, age 37, Finland, US 1903. Arthur H 16, MN. This must be Herman A. Hulda J is 13, Henry F 6 and William 4. Lempi and Emma must be married or out working. There are 3 men listed as servants, but their jobs say laborer general farm. They are John Maki 32, Sali Siptola 40 and Otto Hoka 30, all from Finland. Karen

Forgot to add. You asked abot Kerälä. It is in Oulu, Northern Ostrobothnia. Nearby towns are Kyngas, Riekki, Hiltula and Taipale. Closest airport is Pudasjärvi. This is from a Google search.

I went back and checked the 1900 census, Aitkin county, township 46 and, lo and behold, there was Herman and Emma. Don't know why it didn't come up. It's clearly them. Did a page by page search. Only 3 pages.

Palo, Herman, Apr 1870, age 30, married 10 yrs. US 1891, Finland, farmer
                      Palo, Emma, July 1872, 27, 4 children, 3 living, US 1893
Palo, Selma, July 1891, 8, says born Finland ???
Palo, Lempi, Oct 1893, 6, MN
Palo, Emma, Apr 1898, 2, MN

Hanna V Palo, Herman's second wife, died 11 Aug 1911.

                          Thank you again

Hi again....Thanks for all the info. We were gone all day so didn't have much time to DIGEST it all but there were some things I want to check into further. You just might have solved one of my mysteries !!!! I found an Emma Palo Pouti buried in a cemetery near where they lived but haven't been able to connect her. Now I'm going to check some other stuff and see what I come up with. I also didn't know that Herman [the father] had been married a third time . Or when Hanna died . So you're filling in lots of missing peices. THANK YOU !!

Also thanks for finding Kerala for me ! Now I have a better idea where to look.

Will go for now and get some supper going and get back to you again soon.. Karen

                            Karen,

As you may have seen I have been trying an exchange of searches between Finlander and the Finnish/Swedish language Suku forum. This your search was one of the first I entered into the exchange. I hope that this technique can be useful for extending some of the searches in Finland that we aren't getting solved here on Finlander.

Now you have got feedback regarding this search. I quote:

I have some information about this family. Herman got a proof for Amerika 5.1.1891. Nikolai was born 23.7.1890 in Kortesjärvi. Jaakko's parents were Matti Pesonen 9.4.1817 Evijärvi, Särkijärvi, Pesonen and his wife Maria's parents Matti Kupila/Wertanen b. 8.12.1812 in Evijärvi and Maria Norrena 17.2.1817 in Evijärvi
You may see the full reply in the Suku forum behind this link.
