  • Descendants of Anders Mattsson Kongenkari born Nov 27, 1844 by William Berg

I am searching for the names and addresses (mail or email) of descendants of Anders Mattson Kongenkari born November 27, 1844, in Kelviå, Finland. There were six children, one of whom was my grandmother, Matilda Andersdotter Kongenkari, born October 5, 1873 in Ruotsalo Village, Kelviå. Based on current information, I believe that Karl Krister Dahlstrom, born October 8, 1942, and Lisa Marianne Dahlstrom, born August 31, 1947, are also descendants of Anders Mattson Kongenkari, but I do not have an address for them. My wife and I will be in Finland from July 26-28, 2003, and I would like to meet any descendant of Anders Mattson Kongenkari who might have an interest in sharing information about this family. We will be traveling with Anders Andren who is fluent in Swedish.

    William,
Paavo Hanhisalo wrote me that some information about the genealogy of Anders is in the book "Juuret Kälviällä" by Uuno Huhtala on pages 629-631. The book is in Finnish.
He additionally mentions that several of Anders' children moved to Gamlakarleby (Karleby)/Kokkola.
Paavo may come up with more information
You might email me directly and I'll try to connect you two so you may share information.
    Email me on SFHS%40e-brev.nu

    Hello Hasse:
Thank you very much for your help in my genealogy research. Much of the information provided by Paavo Hanhisalo is new. Does he speak any Swedish? If he does, my friend Anders Andren, who is fluent in Swedish, could telephone him to get additional information. We will also place a telephone call to the wife of Juhani Rantala.
Information that I previously received from Henrik Mangs did not list the name "Rantala" until the marriage of Antii Aatto Kongenkari of Alma Johanna Rantala Korpioja on October 4, 1908. Do you know the source or origin of the name Rantala, and why do the descendants apparently use Rantala as their family name rather than Kongenkari?

    Bill,
No I don't know the Rantala - Konginkari name history.
I think the best for you is to be in contact either through the phone number or "preparing" the call via Paavo H., the man who dug through the material. His email address was in the email I sent you as the CC:
Their language is most definitely Finnish, but the teacher wife I'd guess knows English and probably also Swedish.
Paavo I think can read/write English, if not there is always folks that can help.

Re: Descendants of Anders Mattsson Kongenkari born Nov 27, 1844 by Paavo Hanhisalo

    dear mr. Berg
My name is Paavo Hanhisalo and I'm a former archivist of the National Archives in Finland and now a full-time genealist. The name of my research office is Ten Rivers Ancestry (the website www.tenria.com is also in English).I'm living in Lohtaja, which locates about 10 miles from Kalvia. The old teacher Uuno Huhtala wrote 3 books from Kalvia-Ullava area. These books contain all persons, who were married before 1918. I've sent some information to Hasse Nygard, but I have more information for you.
Kongenkari was a tenant farm, which belonged to Pelttari farm in Ruotsalo village in Kalvia. Huhtala's book mentions 4 first inhabitants of this tenant farm.
They all had all the time the family name Rantala. Kongenkari is not a family name in Finland.
The first inhabitant was Matti Antinpoika Rantala from Ullava. He was born May 3, 1816 and died July 3, 1868.
His wife was Maria Grano. She was born May 10, 1822 and died March 7, 1863. They were married June 2, 1844.
They had 8 children, but 5 died as a child.
Ullava is quite Finnish small town south from Kalvia.
As a historian I'm using Finnish first names and patronymics, although the vicars and other officials translated these names into Swedish. The Finnish language has been an official language in Finnish since 1862, but the officials got 20 years to learn Finnish and the most important parish records were still written in Swedish in 1880. Also in Kalvia the first Finnish Communion books, where all families are mentioned, were written in 1890. At that time almost all people got the correct Finnish first names and patronymics.
For instance Anders Mattsson Rantala's name changed to Antti Matinpoika Rantala. he was the second inhabitant of Kongenkari. The next ones were his sons Aleksanteri and Antti Rantala.
    Matti Rantala's grown-up children are:
    1) Antti, b. Nov 11, 1844, d.dec 18, 1923.
    2) Maria Sofia, b. July 29, 1847, married June 7, 1874 with Josef Junka, later Junell, a sailor, b. July 1853 and died Nov 17, 1921. Maria Sofia died febr 28, 1922.
    4) Matti, b. Oct 15, 1851, d. March 10, 1923. he was married July 26, 1874 with Eeva kristiina Valkama,
    b. June 26, 1844, d. March 22, 1936. Matti went as a son-in-law to Valkama farm and his family name changed from Rantala to Valkama.
Antti Matinpoika Rantala's wife was Liisa Glad.
His son Antti Aatu Rantala has had all the time the family name Rantala. His wife was Alma Johanna Korpioja and she got the name Rantala in 1908, when she was married with Antti Aatu Rantala and moved to Kongenkari.
Yesterday I visited again the parish office in Himanka and I found the big family of Matilda's sister Maria Liisa Hanninen, nee Rantala (14 children).
Maria Liisa Rantala, b.Dec 7, 1879 in Kalvia, died Nov 10, 1949 in Himanka. Her husband was Kaapriel Heikinpoika Hanninen (umlauts over a). He was born Jan 9, 1866 in Kivijarvi and died Sept 4, 1932 in Himanka.
    Their children:
    1. son Vaino Kaapriel, b. Dec 27, 1898
    2. daughter Jenny Maria Juulia, b.Sept 20, 1900, d.Dec 1, 1912
    3. daughter Fanny Matilda, b. March 16, 1902, d.June 2, 1912.
    4. son Juho August, b.June 29, 1904.
    5. son Vilho Henrik, b. Sept 16, 1906, d. Apr 29, 1911.
    6. daughter Aili Johanna, b. March 4, 1909, d. July 20, 1911.
    7. son Urho Anders, b.June 29, 1911, d. Nov 23, 1911.
    8. daughter Suoma Ellisapetti, b.Sept 2, 1912, moved to Raahe, June 21, 1939.
    9. daughter Ilmi Esteri, b. Jan 7, 1915, d. Oct 29, 1915.
    10. son Ernsti Ensio, b. Oct 26, 1916, d.March 12, 1942.
    11. son Armas Aleksanteri, b. Oct 26, 1916, d.June 27, 1919, a twin.
    12. son Veikko Mauri, b. Sept 22, 1919, moved to Raahe in Apr 24, 1945, was married 1945 with Martta Rauha jaakola from Lohtaja.
    13. daughter Kerttu Kyllikki, b. June 16, 1922, d.july 25, 1922.
    14. son Kalle Oskari, b.Oct 13, 1923, moved to Raahe in 1950.
Vaino (umlauts ovet a and o) Hanninen was married July 14, 1921 with Fanni Maria Hillila, b. Febr 26, 1899.
    Vaino died Dec 26, 1957.
They had 7 children. Their daughter Salme moved to Kokkola in 1943 and Pirkko in 1951.
Juho Hanninen was married July 18, 1926 with Eeva Aliina Eskola, b. Nov 15, 1907, probably in Sievi. The parish records in Himanka show their 3 first children. The family moved to Sievi in Febr 2, 1931.
The only relative, who has probably something to do with the Swedish language is Taimi Tellervo Rantala, who married Bertel Dahlstrom in Kokkola. Their children can be Finnish or Swedish or bilingual. The phone catalogue of Kokkola area does not know those names, which you know. I have access to such parish records in Kokkola, which are older than 1965. If you are interested in getting some information from Kokkola, I could get it for you next week. My best foreign languare is English and I'm sure, that you'd better use English, when you are talking with the Rantalas in Kalvia. Juhani and helena Rantala's son Aleksi Rantala comes to Lohtaja as a teacher in August.
    sincerely

Juhani and helena Rantala's son Aleksi Rantala comes to Lohtaja as a teacher in August.
    sincerely

    Descendants of Anders Mattson Konkenkari

Dear Mr William Berg from Madison, USA,

I read your message on the Finland Forum (dated 14.9.2003) about searching for the descendats of Anders Mattson Kongenkari born November 27, 1844 in Kalvia, Finland.

You wrote that your grandmother was Matilda Andersdottir Kongenkari, born October 5, 1873 in Kalvia. I suppose that my grandfather Kalle Viktor Rantala, born October 25, 1875, was your grandmothers brother.

Kalle Viktor Rantala moved to Viipuri, where he got six children with Matilda Juntunen. My mother Helmi Heikkila (Rantala) born February 5, 1913 in Viipuri was one of the children. Kalle Viktor moved back to Kalvia during the 2nd World War with his hole family. He died during the war and he is burried in Kalvia.

Iam second of the three children , born May 2, 1954 and living now in Vantaa with my husband.

It was very intresting to hear, that I have relatives in USA. I am very gratefull if you like to connect me for excample by email. It could be very interesting to chare information of our common relatives.

    My best regards
