    "...In Finland, early pioneers of modernism included women who did establish prominent careers as artists. Two of these women were Helene Schjerfbeck (b. 7.10.1862 d.1.28.1946) and Ellen Thesleff (b 5.10.1869 d. 12.1.1954). Although Schjerfbeck is most widely known for her realist works and self-portraits, she also painted landscapes and still-lifes. Schjerfbeck is now considered one of the leading Nordic modernists of the 20th century and painted until her death, despite being somewhat of a recluse later in life...."
